Samuel B. Fuller
(June 4, 1905 – October 24, 1988) was an American entrepreneur. He was founder and president of the Fuller Products Company, publisher of the New York Age and Pittsburgh Courier, head of the South Side Chicago NAACP, president of the National Negro Business League, and a prominent black Republican. He hitchhiked his way all the way from Memphis, Tennessee to Chicago, Illinois in the midst of segregation to make a better life for himself, his family and the African-American community. During segregation he built the largest African-American enterprise in the entire United States of America. At one time he controlled 9 corporations at the same time and became the richest African-American man in the 1950’s with his main business Fuller Products Company alone generating revenues of over $18,000,000 in one year. He was a deeply spiritual man who believed, practiced and taught to many the laws of success. S.B. Fuller’s life was an illustration of business success and self-help. His company gave inspiration and training to countless aspiring entrepreneurs and future leaders including the Founder of Dudley Products Inc., Joe L. Dudley Sr., the Founder of Ebony/Jet magazine, John H. Johnson, the Founder of Ultra Sheen Products, George Johnson, Dr. T.R.M. Howard and many others.
Joe L. Dudley, Sr.
(May 9, 1937) is and American entrepreneur and humanitarian. He is Co-Founder of the DudleyQ+ brand and is one of the world’s most sought after entrepreneurial masterminds. He is the fifth of 11 children born to Gilmer L. and Clara Yeates Dudley. Joe was born and raised in a one-bedroom house along with his 11 brothers and sisters in the rural community of Aurora, in eastern North Carolina.
Labeled mentally retarded as a young man growing up in a farm, he was forced to overcome many challenges in order to be successful. He credits his mother with inspiring him to prove to the world that he was just as able as anyone else by challenging him to “show them Joe”.
This journey to success began in 1957 when he invested $10.00 in a sales kit and began selling Fuller Products door-to-door while still a student at North Carolina A & T State University (Greensboro, NC) and he went on to become one of the largest manufacturers of black hair products in the world. He was the Founder of Dudley Products Inc., Dudley Cosmetology University and the chain of beauty schools, Dudley Beauty School System. In addition, he controlled other corporations. Dudley Products Inc. became a $35,000,000 a year company and has been listed in the top 50 in Black Enterprise Magazine’s Top 100 Black Owned Businesses.
Through dedication, hard work and persistence, Joe L. Dudley, Sr. has indeed become the role model his mother always knew he could be. Joe L. Dudley, Sr. is much more than just a successful entrepreneur. He is known nationally and internationally as an inspirational speaker and humanitarian who spends much of his time identifying needs and giving back to the community and mankind. One of Mr. Fuller’s (his mentor) goals, and one that Joe Dudley actively pursues today, is to help people to maximize their potential and achieve success. In 2009, Joe L. Dudley, Sr. & Eunice Dudley were featured in a national movie, Good Hair, a Chris Rock documentary about the hair care industry.
